Press-Release of training on “Conversion to Organic Agriculture”

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture of Moldova and “ProRuralInvest” trained 18 agricultural farmers and producers on the conversion to organic agriculture in Moldova.

Organic agriculture offers a high potential for Moldova in leveraging a broader transition to a Green Economy and offers opportunities to preserve the countryside, restore ecosystem functionality, and access growing international markets. It further contributes to the creation of new and higher income jobs (particularly in rural communities), the promotion of new businesses and agro-tourism, and helps mitigate and build resilience to climate change.

Under the EaP GREEN Partnership Programme, funded by the European Commission and other donors, UNEP is leading an initiative to promote organic agriculture in the Eastern European Neighbourhood countries with focus on Armenia, Moldova and Ukraine.

In this context, a one-day training for 18 selected farmers and agricultural producers was organized in Chisinau on 24 June 2015 at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry.

Participants at the session were trained in the areas of agricultural policy and the overall conditions of organic agriculture in the Republic of Moldova. The training included sessions on the development potential and conditions for organic agriculture, new environmentally friendly methods in the field of plant protection, procedures for certification of organic food production, business planning, marketing and financial planning.

In several interactive sessions, experts presented organic agriculture management practices and gave hands-on recommendations regarding crop rotations in organic cultivation, and plant protection measures by means of bio-ecological protection of grapes, peach, plum, apricot and berry crops. The participants further received insight into the procedures for certifying organic food production, the cultivation of medical plants and ecological systems, as well as organic livestock.

Following the successful completion of the training course, several farmers and producers expressed their interest for further support for the conversion to organic farming practices. With the assistance of the EaP Green Programme, interested and selected participants will be supported in the preparation of a tailored business plan for the conversion from conventional to organic agriculture practices on their cultivated land or livestock.
